Canyon Drive to the High Desert Challenge – Sunday April 3rd

By drive coordinator Robin Rich

Join us at the Denny’s parking lot at the Roxford offramp of the 5 freeway in Sylmar for an exciting canyon drive to the High Desert Challenge vintage auto races at Willow Springs International Raceway!

We’ll start at 8:00 sharp driving over Sierra Highway, Placerita, Sand and Little Tujunga Canyon Roads to Foothill Blvd.  We’ll take Foothill to  Big Tujunga Canyon driving over the mountains alongside the reconstruction efforts from the Station Fire and  into the Western edge of the Antelope Valley.  We’ll travel through the community of Elizabeth Lake and down into the Mojave to watch the racing.

The racing starts at 10:00.  We’ll be there in time for the Sunday main events and a delightful lunch at the trackside café.  The food is better than you’d expect and reasonably priced.  Famous for their Willow Burger and the Budweiser Balcony Chili Fries: vegetarians might call ahead.  There’s a $10.00 fee to enter the track but no charge to watch the racing.

There’s always the superslab on the way back but the poppies should be in bloom and there’s a lovely though shorter route through the poppy fields and the community of Lake Hughes, and down Bouquet Canyon to Sierra Highway to take us back to the starting point. See you at 8AM sharp this Sunday April 3rd for a spirited drive with your fellow Volvo enthusiasts! The Roxford off ramp is just north of the 5 & 405 freeway merge in the San Fernando Valley.

Event Recap: Cars & Coffee, SCVCOA Picnic 2011

Our traditional spring morning meet up at Cars & Coffee in Irvine was thrown a curve ball this year by the weather. However, six SoCal VSAers and their Volvos braved the rain to follow Ted Brough in his ’67 1800S from Cars & Coffee to the 11th Annual SCVCOA Spring Volvo Picnic.

Brad Benson's 780 Bertone, Ted Brough's '67 1800S, and Robin Rich's '65 220 Combi at an unusually empty Cars & Coffee parking lot on Saturday March 19th.

Fortunately the traditional Volvo picnic in Irvine Regional Park enjoyed improved weather, and lots of Volvos from Volvo Sports America and Volvo Club of America got together from as far away as Temecula and Arizona. Volvo Cars North America was also in attendance, offering test drives of the new S60 and XC60 and some giveaways! Big thanks as always to SCVCOA president Dave Barton for hosting this relaxing and friendly barbecue. Keep an eye on the photos page of for snapshots of the Volvos at this event! And start looking forward to next March, when we hope to have sunshine for the whole day…

The sun came out for Volvos old and new to pop hoods while their owners ate BBQ at the 11th Annual SCVCOA Spring Volvo Picnic.
